Coping With the New Industrial Revolution

We are currently experiencing the biggest change in the workplace since the Industrial Revolution. The changes in jobs, the lockdowns and the increase in hybrid and home working have meant that many workplace teams have been split apart. New employees that weren’t part of the original “team” have been inducted remotely in many cases, leading to some people being affected by the emotional, physical and mental stresses caused by this dramatic change in their work and family lives.

While some will have thrived under the ‘new normal’, others may have found it difficult to cope with the social isolation, missing the camaraderie and bonding that happens around the coffee machine. The lack of opportunities to chat with colleagues about one’s personal life can mean that difficulties are not shared with managers or peers.

Here are some suggestions for employers that might just help colleagues feel more part of the team and be more able to share their worries:

  • Regular contact days for teams
  • Peer to peer mentoring
  • Buddying up on projects
  • Virtual shared coffee breaks
  • Walk and talk sessions – virtual or in person
  • Encourage positive feedback and recognition
  • Regular fun company updates encouraging engagement, quizzes, etc

Creating better connectivity will help to identify those that may need extra assistance – and don’t forget to point them to the BOSS Charity if they have any financial concerns!
