How did you hear about the BOSS Business Supplies Charity?
I had an accident in August 2024 that left me with a life-threatening brain injury, and I had to have emergency surgery. I haven’t been able to work during my recovery. This led to financial difficulties, and I was really worried that that I might lose my home.
I was signposted to the turn2us.org.uk website where I could enter my details, and it identified charities that may be able to help. Because I worked in the business supplies industry for 20 years, I qualified to apply to the BOSS Business Supplies Charity for help.
Did you think that the charity would be able to help your situation?
I didn’t expect to get any help, I have never claimed benefits before and I felt embarrassed, but I didn’t know where else to turn.
It was so easy to apply. I filled in a simple form and explained my situation. Then I had a phone call with Liz Whyte, and she put me completely at ease and treated me with kindness and respect and made me feel so much better. She talked me through the whole process and just a few days later I got a decision.
What specific support or services did the charity provide?
The charity helped me pay housing costs and awarded me a grant to help cover my bills due to being unable to work.
Can you explain how the support has helped you?
The help has lifted a major weight off my mind, I was so worried about losing my home. It has allowed me time to concentrate on my rehab. Learning to walk again and being able to look after myself has been a difficult emotional, as well as physical, journey but I’m proud to say that I am going back on a phased return to work in May. My employer has been very supportive and has made adjustments that will get me back into work in the best way possible.
What would you say to someone thinking about approaching the charity for help?
Don’t feel embarrassed or intimidated, you will be treated with respect and compassion. The grant has taken away my worries and helped speed up my recovery.
